EDGEFIELD HISTORY CLASS

In 1995, under the leadership of Dr. James O. Farmer, the June Rainsford Henderson Professor of Southern and Local History at the University of South Carolina Aiken, the Edgefield History Class began to meet in the Edgefield County Public Library. The Class has met almost every Sunday afternoon since to discuss subjects related to Edgefield history.

Over the years the Class has moved its meeting location from the Public Library to the Magnolia Dale House Museum, to the Tompkins Library, to the William Bouknight Theatre in the Joanne T. Rainsford Discovery Center, and to the Offices of The Rainsford Development Corporation. The Class is informal with members meeting around the table, enjoying coffee and cookies. All members are encouraged to contribute to the discussions. It is open to anyone who would like to attend.

In 2009, the Class authored and published The Story of Edgefield, an informative guidebook designed to introduce visitors to Edgefield. It is currently working on a second edition to that book which it hopes will be available by the end of 2019. The Class has also been working on another book, The American Revolution in Edgefield, From Augusta to Ninety Six, which it hopes to publish in the coming years.

Anyone desiring to join the Edgefield History Class should call the Society’s office (telephone number: 803-637-2233) for exact information on time and location.
